A costly defensive miscommunication condemned Nigeria’s Super Eagles B to a 1-0 defeat against defending champions Senegal in their opening match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Both sides appeared headed for a stalemate in Zanzibar until the 75th minute when Senegal capitalized on a Nigerian lapse.

Moctar Koïta chased down a hopeful midfield pass from Libasse Guèye after defender Leonard Ngenge left the ball for goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal, who was caught out of position.

Koïta then squared for Christian Gomis, who calmly slotted past two retreating defenders for the decisive goal.

The match was a physical affair with few clear-cut chances. Senegal’s best first-half opportunity came through Baye Ciss, who misdirected a free-kick header wide.

Nigeria, meanwhile, managed just one shot on target throughout the game, while Senegal recorded two.

The result leaves Senegal in a strong position as they prepare to face Congo next Tuesday. Nigeria, meanwhile, must quickly regroup ahead of a crucial clash with Sudan on the same day.
