As the countdown to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) continues, Senegalese star Libasse Gueye has issued a bold warning to Nigeria and other contenders, declaring his side’s intention to defend the title they won two years ago, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Teungueth FC winger Gueye, one of the standout players selected for the tournament, revealed that playing at CHAN was a personal goal upon his return to Senegal.
After a turbulent stint in Spain where contractual issues disrupted his progress, Gueye chose to return home to rebuild his career, gain consistent playing time, and reestablish himself on the African football scene.
“The local national team is at a very good level. We selected the best players in the league, and the group is working well. The results will follow,” he said.
Reflecting on their preparations, Gueye noted the importance of friendly matches, particularly against Guinea.
“The preparation games helped us a lot. We drew one and then won one. The coach is doing an excellent job, and we can feel the progression. Even though we haven’t been together for long, the few weeks spent together have created real cohesion.”
Speaking on Senegal’s mindset going into the tournament, Gueye emphasized their ambition.
“CHAN is a very important competition. We want to make our mark on this era and bring the trophy home. We don’t assume we’ve already won it, but we are going there for our own victory.”
