African football has been dealt a major setback following confirmation that the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be cancelled, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The development was disclosed by the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, during a press conference held in Morocco on Saturday.

CHAN, which is exclusively reserved for home-based players competing in their domestic leagues, has over the years served as a vital platform for unearthing local talent and strengthening domestic competitions across the continent.

Its cancellation is therefore seen as a significant disappointment for players, coaches, clubs, and fans who rely on the tournament for exposure and development.

Since its inception, the competition has played a crucial role in providing opportunities for locally based footballers to gain international experience, often acting as a springboard to senior national teams and professional moves abroad.

While CAF has not yet provided detailed reasons behind the decision, the announcement has sparked widespread reaction within the African football community, with many stakeholders expressing concern over the impact on player development and the growth of domestic leagues.
