COSAFA Women's Championship: Zambia Face South Africa In Final

The COSAFA Women’s Championship will have new champions this year. The 2021 winners, Tanzania, who were the invited team, got eliminated from the competition in the semi finals by Zambia.

The Copper Queens scored all the goals in the first semi final which Bruce Mwape’s side won 2-1.

Barbra Banda scored her ninth goal of the tournament as Misozi Zulu found the winning goal after team mate Lushomo Mweemba scored the equalizer for the opponents. The Zambian captain leads the goal scoring poll and is likely to seal with the golden boot at the final on Sunday, 11 September.

Zambia will face South Africa in the final. The Copper Queens denied the host country a medal in last year’s edition and will be hoping to continue on that form again this year. Mwape’s side will be hoping to upset the hosts and clinch the title for the first time ever.

Banyana Banyana escaped a scare in their semi final. They needed a late goal from Lithemba Sam-Sam to take them to the last round of the competition as they beat Namibia 1-0. She has now scored four goals so far in the competition.

The former Banyana captain, Simphiwe Dludlu led side finished top of Group A with seven points to qualify for the semis while the Brave Gladiators came second to Zambia in Group B with six points to qualify for the top four. The Twiga Stars won Group C with seven points to qualify for the semis.

The Gladiators will be hoping to defeat the team from the Cecafa side and win a medal for the first time since 2006 where they finished second losing the Banyana.

The final will take place 3pm at the Wolfson Stadium with the third-place play-off on Sunday will be at the same venue between Tanzania and Namibia kick-offs at 12pm.
