CWG2022: AFN In Shock, As Team Nigeria To Lose Women's 4x100m Relay Gold For Doping

A member of Team Nigeria Women's 4x100m Relay team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham has tested positive for a banned substance, plunging the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) into a fresh doping crisis, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

The team which consists of Tobi Amusan, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favor Ofili and Grace Nwokocha won gold and set a new African record of 42.10 seconds. 

But the race anchor Nwokocha has been caught in the drug web, which will make the effort of the team be in vain.  

BSNsports.com.ng reports that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has informed the AFN of the development while they are still awaiting confirmation of the B sample.

When athletes are found guilty, medals and achievements will be lost by the team.

AFN president Tonobok Okowa expressed shock at the turn of events, saying: "I don't know of any positive test yet, but it would be shocking."

However, sources in AFN confirmed that the federation has been sent a letter from WADA, but spoke on condition of anonymity and confirmed that the President had been aware of it since the beginning of the week. 

They also confirmed that Nwokocha A's sample tested positive for anabolic steroids but not for the exact steroid.

Nwokocha, 21, is multiple national champion in the 100m plus, clocked a personal best of 10.97 seconds in the 100m at the recent World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA. 

She also clocked a personal best of 22.44 seconds in the 200 meters. This is the first time Nwokocha has been embroiled in a drug-related controversy in her budding athletic career.
