Calf Injury Stops Australia's Kerr From Match Against Super Falcons
Ibrahim Lateef
2023 FIFA Women's World Cup co-host Australia will be without forward Sam Kerr for their match against Nigeria's Super Falcons, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The striker, who has been hotly-tipped in the adidas Golden Boot race, suffered a calf injury during training.
"Sam Kerr is unavailable after she picked up a calf injury at training on MD-1," a tweet by the Matildas' official account read.
"Sam will be unavailable for the next two matches with the Matildas Medical Team to re-assess her following our second group stage match."
Kerr missed Australia's slim win in the curtain-raiser against Republic of Ireland on 20 July, and will be out against Nigeria seven days later. She will be assessed prior to their final Group B clash with Canada on 31 July.
Kerr also took to social media following the news, stating: "Unfortunately I sustained a calf injury yesterday in training. I wanted to share this with everyone so there is no distraction from us doing what we came here to achieve. Of course I would have loved to have been out there tonight but I can’t wait to be apart of this amazing journey which starts now.â€
