Can Enyimba Win the 2024 CAF Champions League Again?

By Gbenga Gboyega

Head Coach of the 2023 Nigeria Premier League Champions, Enyimba International - Finidi George has clinched his first title with the club and would lead the People's Elephant to next season's CAF Champions League.

Recall that BSNSports.com.ng reported earlier this year that the Chairman of Remo Stars - Kunle Soname stated his stance on the chances of Nigerian clubs in CAF competitions.

Speaking with The Guardia at Ikenne in April, Soname said: “I don’t see any Nigerian club winning the CAF Champions League for now because of the huge financial burden involved.”

Enyimba remains the only Nigerian club to have won the CAF Champions League over a decade ago, doing so in consecutive seasons between 2003 and 2004, while bagging the CAF Super Cup for 2004, and 2005.

But since reaching the semifinals in 2011 and 2018, Enyimba and other Nigerian clubs are yet to come close to another continental title.

Head Coach Finidi George, helped Enyimba finish 3rd in the regular season, with 3 points behind Bendel Insurance in Group A, having the joint most wins (9) and being the second-best defensive team.

However, for next season, the top 3 unbeaten teams in Enyimba, Rivers United, and Remo Stars following the playoffs, alongside the Federation Cup winner between Bendel Insurance and Rangers will represent the NPL on the continent, with Enyimba having the historic edge to go the distance.
