The battle to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final is beginning to gather pace, with co-hosts Spain and Morocco emerging as the leading contenders to stage football's biggest match, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

As the football world reflects on the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, attention is gradually shifting to the centenary edition of the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, alongside commemorative opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

While FIFA has yet to announce which venue will host the final, both Spain and Morocco have intensified efforts to secure the prestigious fixture.

Morocco is hoping its proposed Hassan II Stadium, currently under construction near Casablanca, will strengthen its bid to host the final.

Designed to accommodate approximately 115,000 spectators, the stadium is expected to become the largest football venue in the world upon completion. Moroccan officials believe the state-of-the-art facility would provide a fitting stage for the tournament's showpiece event and mark a historic milestone for African football.

If selected, Casablanca would become only the second African city to host a FIFA World Cup final after Johannesburg staged the 2010 decider, when Spain defeated the Netherlands to claim their maiden world title.

Despite growing speculation, Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa has maintained that no decision has been reached, stressing that FIFA, together with the three host nations, will determine the allocation of matches.

Spain, meanwhile, remains confident of hosting the final, citing its extensive experience in staging major international sporting events and its world-class stadium infrastructure.

Spanish Football Federation president Rafael Louzán has argued that Spain offers the strongest logistical and organisational credentials to stage the tournament's biggest match.

Among the country's leading candidates are the renovated Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, with a capacity of more than 80,000, and the redeveloped Camp Nou in Barcelona, which is expected to accommodate around 105,000 spectators once renovation works are completed.

Spain previously hosted the FIFA World Cup final in 1982, when Italy defeated West Germany 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The debate has also been influenced by comments from Louzán, who referenced crowd disturbances during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final as an example of the importance of ensuring security and crowd management at major sporting events.

While his remarks have added another dimension to the discussion surrounding the hosting rights, Moroccan football authorities have continued to express confidence in the country's ability to organise global events, pointing to its successful delivery of numerous continental and international tournaments in recent years.

With FIFA yet to confirm the venue for the 2030 World Cup final, competition between the co-hosts is expected to intensify as preparations for the historic centenary tournament continue.
