Manager Martin O'Neill has highlighted the strengths of Kelechi Iheanacho following the Nigerian forward’s decisive performance in Celtic FC’s 2-1 away victory over Dundee FC on Sunday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Iheanacho emerged as the hero of the encounter, coming off the bench to net the winning goal and secure all three points for the Hoops.
Speaking after the game, O’Neill reflected on the striker’s journey back to fitness, revealing that injuries had disrupted his rhythm since arriving at the club.
“When I arrived, he was recovering from a hamstring injury, which he picked up very early in a game,” O’Neill said.
“Then he was brought back into the side and unfortunately suffered the same injury again in the cup final, so he’s been fighting his way back.”
The Celtic boss also disclosed that he had a candid conversation with Iheanacho about his career trajectory, urging the forward to rediscover his peak form.
“I’ve spoken to him and told him he’s been a really fine player in his career. At 29, he should be at the peak of his career rather than struggling at times. That’s the key point,” he added.
O’Neill went on to underline Iheanacho’s attacking attributes, particularly his ability to influence games in the final third.
“He scores goals, he can hold the ball up very well, and he’s strong in that aspect.
He may not run the channels as much, but ultimately, he brings quality and presence up front,” he concluded.
Iheanacho’s latest contribution could mark a turning point in his season as he looks to regain consistency and play a pivotal role in Celtic’s campaign.
