Champions League: CAF Set To Revert To Old Format

Sampson Adedeji

According to a report emanating from the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, the football body is pondering a return of the Champions League to its old format, BSNsports.com.ng has gathered.

The competition has been on a home-and-away basis before the turn of the millennium when CAF changed it to a group stage format after the qualification final round.

Following the proposed Super League in the continent, the football governing body is set to move the elite inter-club tournament back to the old format to accommodate the new competition.

The reports further suggest that, once the clubs participating in the Super League have been chosen, the CAF will draw lots between the other best-ranked teams in their respective domestic leagues.

The direct eliminations will be played in six rounds to reach the final which will be played back and forth.

The next General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football, which will take place in Tanzania on August 10, will have to ratify the creation of the African Super League and will announce the change in the format of the Champions League.
