Chelle Approves Strategic Move to Recruit Dual-Eligible Premier League Talent

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is preparing to open formal discussions with Michael Kayode as part of efforts to secure his international allegiance for Nigeria.

The move follows approval from Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Kayode, a 21-year-old right-back currently playing for Brentford FC, is viewed as a key long-term prospect due to his pace, physical strength, and attacking contributions, including his distinctive long throw-ins.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Kayode remains eligible to represent either nation at senior level. Despite his consistent performances in the Premier League and a reported market valuation of €35 million, he was recently overlooked by Italy’s senior team coach Gennaro Gattuso for the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off fixtures.

Instead, Gattuso opted for alternative defensive options, including Atalanta’s emerging talent Marco Palestra. The decision drew criticism within Italian football circles, with legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon publicly urging the national team setup to secure Kayode’s commitment before Nigeria makes its move.

Kayode, who has previously represented Italy at youth level, was subsequently called up to the country’s Under-21 squad under coach Silvio Baldini. However, his lack of a senior international cap leaves the door open for a potential switch to Nigeria.

Sources within the NFF indicate that initial contact with the player’s representatives has been encouraging. Further discussions are expected, with Chelle reportedly willing to travel to London to personally engage with Kayode as Nigeria intensifies its recruitment efforts.
