Chelle Confident Super Eagles Are Ready to Defend Unity Cup Title Against Jamaica

Nigeria Head Coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence in his team's ability to retain the Unity Cup title when the Super Eagles face Jamaica in Saturday's final in London, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Both finalists secured comfortable victories in their respective semi-final matches, with Nigeria defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 and Jamaica overcoming India by the same scoreline to set up another chapter in the growing rivalry between the two nations.

The encounter will mark the third meeting between the Super Eagles and the Reggae Boyz in the history of the Afro-Caribbean tournament, which celebrates football, music and cultural ties in the British capital.

The teams last met in the competition's final in 2024, when Nigeria emerged victorious after a dramatic contest. Moses Simon gave the Super Eagles an early lead before Kaheim Dixon restored parity for Jamaica. Samuel Chukwueze put Nigeria back in front early in the second half, only for Jon Russell to equalize once more and force the match into a penalty shootout.

Nigeria held their nerve from the spot, converting all five penalties, while Jamaica's Dwayne Atkinson missed his effort, handing the Super Eagles the trophy.

Although Simon and Chukwueze are absent from this year's tournament, Nigeria have impressed with a youthful squad. Debutant Femi Azeez scored both goals in Tuesday's semi-final victory over Zimbabwe, underlining the depth and promise within Chelle's emerging team.

Jamaica also advanced in convincing fashion, with Courtney Clarke opening the scoring against India before Dixon added a second to secure a place in the final.

Ahead of Saturday's showdown, Chelle dismissed concerns about the possibility of another penalty shootout, insisting that his focus remains solely on winning the match regardless of how it unfolds.

"Penalties are part of football and can decide the outcome of a game," Chelle said. "Every time I go into a match, my mentality is to win.

"That is the culture we are building within this team — a winning culture. I don't know if Saturday's game will be decided by penalties, but I know we have prepared to win. These are young players with bright futures who are hungry for success.

"We will see how the game develops, but our objective is clear: to win and defend the Unity Cup."

With a blend of youthful talent, growing confidence and a trophy to defend, the Super Eagles will be aiming to maintain their impressive form and successfully retain the Unity Cup crown against a determined Jamaican side.
