Chelle Quits? Super Eagles Coach Speaks About His Future with Nigeria

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stated that he is keen to continue in charge of Nigeria’s senior national team, but stressed that his future ultimately rests with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking after Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Chelle explained that a post-tournament meeting with the NFF would determine whether he remains in the role.

Chelle has overseen a significant turnaround since taking charge just a year ago, building a competitive and well-organised side. Despite that progress, Nigeria have suffered narrow disappointments, losing on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF World Cup playoff final and again to Morocco in the AFCON semi-final.

Addressing journalists at the post-match press conference, the coach expressed both pride and frustration at the team’s campaign. “I am a fan of this Nigerian team. This job is very important to me and I try to do my job with total commitment,” Chelle said. “The tournament is not over yet. After the AFCON, I will meet with the NFF and we will decide the next step.”

He added:

 “My future, I don’t know for now. I am the coach of Nigeria at this moment, but it depends on whether the NFF want me to continue or not. I am proud of my players, but also disappointed because I believe we are the best team in this tournament.”

Nigeria were eliminated after a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco following a goalless 120 minutes. The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff against Egypt on Saturday.
