Chelle Seeks Salary Increase After AFCON Success with Super Eagles

By BSN Sports

Head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has reportedly requested a significant salary increase as a condition for continuing in his role.

Sources within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) indicate that the Franco-Malian tactician is seeking a monthly salary of $100,000 — a substantial rise from the figure he has earned since taking charge of the team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The proposed adjustment is said to represent an increase of more than 80 per cent on his current remuneration.

Chelle’s request follows Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles secured a bronze medal finish. The team’s expansive and attacking style of play in Morocco drew praise from supporters and pundits alike, with many calling on the federation to retain the coach despite differing views over the reported salary demand.

The NFF has dismissed speculation linking Chelle with a move to Olympique de Marseille, amid rumours of a proposed 18-month contract offer from the Ligue 1 side. However, it is understood that several African national teams are monitoring his situation following Nigeria’s strong showing at the continental tournament.

Sources further suggest that failure to reach an agreement over improved terms could prompt Chelle to consider alternative opportunities.

Neither the NFF nor Chelle has publicly confirmed the details of the negotiations. Discussions are expected to continue as the federation weighs financial considerations against the desire for continuity ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Chelle signed a two-year contract with Nigeria in 2024 with one year remaining to stay with Super Eagles.
