Chelle Shuns Contract Questions, Focuses on Nigeria’s AFCON Opener

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declined to comment on the status of his contract, insisting that his sole focus remains Nigeria’s quest for success at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opening fixture against Tanzania, Chelle made it clear that discussions about his contract renewal or any outstanding obligations were not a priority at this stage of the tournament.

“For this game, we are very happy to be here,” Chelle said. “It is a big game because it is our first match, and the first game is always very important. We are pleased to be playing here in Fez, and of course, we are working very hard to win this match.”

The coach stressed that his attention is firmly on the competition and the performance of his players rather than off-field matters.

“Since I started this job, I have always approached it as if it could end after each match,” he added. “Right now, my focus is entirely on the AFCON, my players, and the officials. After the tournament, by God’s grace, when we have reason to smile, we can then talk about my contract. This is not the best time for such questions.”

Chelle also urged members of the media to direct their attention toward the team’s preparations and overall performance at the tournament.

“I want us (the media) to ask questions about the players, the tournament, and the team as a whole not about my contract,” he said.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, will face Tanzania on Tuesday night in Fez, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nigerian time. Later the same evening, Group C rivals Tunisia and Uganda will also clash at the same venue.
