Chelle’s Future As Super Eagles Coach to Be Decided Next Month

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will conduct a formal review of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s contract next month, following the conclusion of Nigeria’s remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025, signed an initial one-year deal with an option to extend for an additional two years, contingent on performance. His primary mandate was to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As it stands, the Super Eagles are in a precarious position in Group C, currently sitting third with 11 points from eight matches. They trail group leaders South Africa by six points, and Benin Republic by three points with only two qualifying fixtures remaining.

Uncertain Future Ahead of AFCON 2025

The timing of the contract review is particularly significant, coming just two months before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Morocco. The outcome could determine whether Chelle leads the national team into the continental tournament or exits before the campaign begins.

While the NFF will drive the review process, sources suggest the final decision on Chelle’s future could also involve input from the National Sports Commission, reflecting the high stakes attached to both the World Cup qualification and AFCON preparations.

With the Super Eagles’ qualification hopes hanging in the balance, Chelle’s performance in the remaining matches will likely play a decisive role in shaping his future with the national team.
