Club World Cup Set For Major Expansion In 2028

The FIFA Club World Cup could undergo a significant expansion ahead of its next edition in 2029, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

A report by British newspaper The Guardian claims that both FIFA and UEFA are working on a joint proposal to increase the number of participating teams from 32 to 48.

The expanded format is expected to provide more clubs from across the globe with the opportunity to compete in the prestigious tournament, which was revamped into a 32-team competition for the 2025 edition.

The report also revealed that the current regulation limiting countries to a maximum of two club representatives could be scrapped.

 Such a move would allow more teams from Europe’s top leagues and other strong football nations to qualify for the competition.

FIFA is believed to be assessing the commercial and sporting benefits of the proposed expansion as interest in the tournament continues to grow.

If approved, the 2029 edition would become the largest Club World Cup in history, further strengthening FIFA’s ambition to create a global club competition that rivals the popularity of major international tournaments.
