Commonwealth Games 2026: Umoafia Claims Weightlifting Gold With Record-Breaking Performance

Nigeria's Edidiong Joseph Umoafia delivered a record-breaking performance to win the men's 71kg weightlifting gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian lifter set a new Commonwealth Games record with a combined total of 319kg after lifting 147kg in the snatch, another Games record, before successfully clearing 172kg in the clean and jerk to secure the gold medal.

Samoa's Joseph Tafi finished second with a total lift of 314kg to claim the silver medal, while Nauru's Elgin Moses settled for bronze with 310kg.

Umoafia's victory handed Team Nigeria its fourth gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, further boosting the country's medal tally with another outstanding display on the weightlifting platform.
