Commonwealth Games Trials: Obi Shines With Personal Best in Women's 100m Heats

The women's 100m heats at the Commonwealth Games Trials held at Yaba Technical College, Lagos, produced several impressive performances as athletes battled for places in the next round, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Jennifer Chukwuka Obi emerged as one of the standout performers of the day after storming to victory in Heat 3 with a new personal best of 11.26 seconds despite a headwind of -0.8m/s. 

Merit Ufuoma finished second in 11.50 seconds, while Lucy Nwankwo came third in 11.60 seconds.

In Heat 6, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo crossed the finish line first in 11.45 seconds (-2.5m/s). 

She held off the challenge of Prestina Ochonogor, who briefly stepped away from the long jump event to compete, as well as defending champion Chioma Nweke.

Miracle Ezechukwu also delivered a commanding performance, comfortably winning her heat in 11.45 seconds (-2.3m/s). 

Providence Joseph finished second in 11.98 seconds, while Excel Ogbodu placed third in 12.11 seconds.

Heat 2 was won by Blessing Ogundiran, who eased to victory in a time of 11.53 seconds (-2.1m/s).

 Lydia Ajayi Bibilomo secured second place in 11.80 seconds, with Mariam Jegede finishing third in 11.98 seconds.

Meanwhile, Olayinka Olajide claimed victory in the opening heat, clocking 11.59 seconds (-1.5m/s).

 Tejiri Ugoh followed closely in second with 11.64 seconds, while Maria Omokwe Thompson completed the top three in 11.73 seconds.

With several athletes posting strong times despite challenging headwinds, the competition for places on Nigeria's team for the Commonwealth Games is expected to intensify as the trials progress.
