Crickets Federation Election: Onyeama Eyes Return To NCF Leadership, Outline Plans To Transform The Sport

 Former President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Emeka Onyeama, has unveiled a seven-point development agenda for the sport ahead of Saturday’s board elections, signaling his intent to return to the federation with a renewed vision for growth and sustainability, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Currently serving as Chairman of the FCT Cricket Association, Onyeama is vying to represent the North Central zone on the NCF Board, a position that would make him eligible to contest for the presidency of the federation. The elections are set to take place on Saturday, September 20, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

His campaign gained renewed momentum following a last-minute reversal of an earlier disqualification. Onyeama, alongside three other aspirants, was initially ruled ineligible just days before the election. However, a letter dated September 18, signed by the NCF Secretary and Secretary of the Electoral Committee, confirmed his clearance to participate, citing stakeholder appeals and a commitment to fair play.

 “I have been directed by the Chairman of the NCF 2025 Electoral Committee to inform you of your clearance to participate in the 2025 NCF election,” the letter stated. “This development is based on reconsideration, given the appeal from key stakeholders and well-meaning individuals in the spirit of good sportsmanship.”

Despite the late approval, Onyeama expressed confidence in his track record and vision for the future of cricket in Nigeria.

 “I can’t help the growth of the game if I’m outside. I need to be on the board to effect change, and that’s what I’m working toward, regardless of these distractions,” Onyeama told reporters in Abuja. “We remain focused on driving grassroots development and attracting private sector support.”

Seven-Point Agenda for Cricket Development

Onyeama’s development plan centers on deepening cricket’s reach and modernizing its administration. His seven-point agenda includes:

1. Grassroots Revolution through partnerships with tertiary institutions

2. Nationwide Infrastructure Development, particularly on university campuses

3. Technology Integration in cricket operations and outreach

4. Strategic Media Partnerships to broaden exposure

5. Transparency in governance and decision-making

6. Inclusivity across regions, gender, and age groups

7. Sustainability through private sector engagement and long-term planning

He emphasized the need to go beyond elite competitions, stressing that true development lies in empowering young talents at the grassroots.

 “Everybody must pull their weight to take cricket to the next level. One of my top priorities is integrating the sport into our universities. We need more undergraduates playing and understanding the game,” he said.

Onyeama also highlighted the role of digital engagement in modern sports development.

 “We must strengthen our presence on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and invest in live streaming our games. This is how we bring in new fans and sponsors.”

A Divisive Build-Up to the Elections

The lead-up to the 2025 NCF elections has been marred by controversy, with several candidates facing disqualification and reinstatement. Onyeama’s reinstatement means the presidential race, initially uncontested, could now see competition should he secure a board seat on Saturday.

He congratulated the newly elected athletes’ and technical representatives but noted that "the real work begins now."

Despite the turbulent lead-up, Onyeama remains optimistic, framing the election as a turning point for cricket in Nigeria. “This is an opportunity to reposition Nigerian cricket for long-term growth. The future is bright, but it will require collective effort and bold decisions,” he concluded.
