Crisis Looms In CAF As President Motsepe Set To Step Down

Uncertainty is beginning to surround the leadership of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following reports that its president, Patrice Motsepe, could step down from his position, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to Moroccan insider Youssefamz13, Motsepe is reportedly considering leaving his role at CAF to focus on a potential political future in South Africa, including a possible presidential bid.

The speculation is not entirely unexpected, as Motsepe’s name has been linked with political ambitions in recent months within the country. 

Discussions around succession within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), currently led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, have intensified, with some observers identifying the CAF boss as a unifying figure for a party challenged by recent electoral setbacks.

A prominent mining magnate and influential businessman, Motsepe is widely regarded as a respected figure in South Africa, with a profile that could appeal to a broad section of the electorate. Despite this, he has consistently maintained in the past that he has no interest in pursuing a political career.

Motsepe was re-elected in March 2025 for another four-year term, extending his mandate at CAF until 2029, with a focus on consolidating reforms introduced since he first assumed office in 2021. 

Should he step down in 2027, it would represent a resignation before the completion of his tenure rather than a decision not to seek re-election.

At present, there has been no official confirmation that Motsepe is preparing to leave his role. Under his leadership, CAF has recorded notable institutional and financial stability, alongside a significant rise in revenues from its continental competitions.

However, with the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 approaching and several key development projects ongoing, any early departure could trigger significant disruption within African football’s governing body.

For now, the situation remains speculative, with stakeholders across the continent closely monitoring developments to see whether the rumours materialise or fade away.
