After one week of intense competition by over 1,200 athletes representing 15 companies from rhe country's oil and gas sector curtains will fall today at the 20th Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games in Abuja. The final of the football event, the third place match and athletics events are going to be the highlights of the closing day events.

To do battle for the football gold are teams representing NLNG and NMDPRA. Before the final, however, a third place match. To get to the final, NLNG defeated arch-rival NNPC 5-4 after a nail-biting penalty shootout. The other semi final featured NMDPRA and OANDO. Like in the first semi-final, NMDPRA won 5-3 via penalties. According to the programme, the third place match involving NNPC and OANDO will precede the final showdown between the two gladiators.

When late last year the Local Organising Committee of the 20th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games flagged off the preliminaries of the football event in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, little did they know that a much tougher assignment awaited them in Abuja, a few months later,

According to the chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Sulaiman Sulaiman the week-long event in Port Harcourt was a dress rehearsal to what was to come in Abuja.

The final day will not be an all-football affair. During the football final, there will be athletics at intervals. Spectators, especially, lovers of athletics, are expected to be entertained when the athletes compete in 100 mtrs and 200 mtrs dash, 4x100 and 4x400 mtrs Relays for both male and female categories.

The closing day events will also feature a farewell march past, traditional/cultural dances and many other side attractions.

The games will be officially declared closed by the Managing Director of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari. Also expected at the closing ceremony are top government officials, top executives of the participating companies, members of the public, among others.

“It has been a wonderful experience,” Dr Sulaiman told journalists at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja yesterday. He was happy and looked visibly relieved that the games were winding to a close. “We have seen a lot and learned a lot. We hope to improve on what we have built here,” he stressed.

Chairman technical committee admitted that although there were a few hitches here and there, the 20th Nigerian Oil and Has Industry Games would go down in history as “the biggest and the best NOGIG, so far. “It has been an awesome experience. Thank God for the proper planning before the games. As you may have seen,, events have been running smoothly and we have not had any major setback in all our activities.”
