Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been drawn in Group D of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket, alongside Mozambique and Rwanda, as they prepare to defend their continental crown for a fifth consecutive time, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The draw, held ahead of the tournament scheduled to take place later this year, has placed the reigning champions in what many consider a competitive group, with both Mozambique and Rwanda showing marked improvement in recent years.
D’Tigress, who have dominated African women’s basketball over the last decade, will be aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive title, having emerged champions in the 2017, 2019, and 2021 editions.
The full groupings for the 2025 tournament are as follows:
• Group A: Ivory Coast, Egypt, Angola
• Group B: Mali, Cameroon, South Sudan
• Group C: Senegal, Guinea, Uganda
• Group D: Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda
With Nigeria’s impressive track record and experienced squad, expectations remain high among fans and basketball analysts alike. However, they will need to be at their best against a hungry field of challengers seeking to dethrone the African queens of the court.
D'Tigress coach, Rena Wakama (32 years) after a year in charge became the first female coach to ever win an Afrobasket title. She won Nigeria's 4th consecutive and 6th all-time Afrobasket title.
And also became the First coach to lead Nigeria to a win against a Top 3 ranked team at the Olympics.
