DR Congo Has “All The Weapons” To Beat Jamaica - Says Ex-President

Former president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA), Constant Omari Selemani, has expressed strong confidence in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s chances of qualifying for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking in an interview with Ouragan.cd, Omari backed the national team, the Leopards, to secure victory against Jamaica in the decisive intercontinental playoff final scheduled for March 31. He cited the team’s tactical strength and Jamaica’s recent performances as reasons for his optimism.

“I followed the match. Considering the football played by Jamaica, we have all the weapons to beat the Reggae Boyz and play in this World Cup. Next Tuesday, we will be overjoyed,” he said.

The Leopards are led by head coach Sébastien Desabre, who has been tasked with guiding the team through a critical phase in their World Cup qualification campaign.

Omari’s remarks come weeks after he participated in the “Night of the Pioneers,” an event organized by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Didier Budimbu Ntubuanga, on February 24 in Kinshasa. The gathering brought together key stakeholders in Congolese sports to discuss strategies for supporting the national team’s qualification ambitions.

Several former sports ministers were also in attendance, including Claude-François Kabulo, Denis Kambayi, Papy Niango, Amos Mbayo, Willy Bakonga, Serge Konde, and Jean-Pierre Lisanga Bonganga.

The meeting aimed to foster collaboration among past and present sports leaders, encouraging them to pool their expertise and experience in support of the national team. Authorities say the initiative is designed to build a unified front and strengthen collective efforts as the Leopards pursue a place on football’s biggest stage.
