Dakar 2026 Unveils Official Mascot ‘Ayo’

The Organising Committee of the Youth Olympic Games has unveiled Ayo, the official mascot for Dakar 2026, during a special ceremony marking the 100-day countdown at the Grand Théâtre in Dakar, Senegal, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ayo, a spirited young lion, embodies the energy, optimism, and determination of Africa’s youth.

His name, meaning “joy” in Yoruba, a language widely spoken across West Africa, reflects the Games’ core themes of celebration, unity, and hope.

Dressed in a traditional Fulani Tingandé hat, Ayo also symbolises wisdom, dignity, and a deep connection to Senegal’s rural heritage.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry praised the mascot’s symbolism, noting its broader significance for the continent.

“Mascot Ayo carries a powerful message of joy and breaks many boundaries. He truly represents how young and dynamic our continent is,” said Coventry.

“These Games will inspire the next generation and open doors of opportunity across Africa. I can’t wait to return here next year to celebrate together.”

Also present at the unveiling were Humphrey Kayange, Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Dakar 2026, and Mamadou D. Ndiaye, President of the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee and the Senegalese Olympic Committee.

Ayo stands as a proud ambassador for Dakar 2026, Africa’s first-ever Youth Olympic Games, celebrating cultural diversity, resilience, and the unifying spirit of sport.
