Defense Shakeup: Ajayi Return As Nigeria Face DR Congo In Crucial World Cup Playoff
By BSN Sports
Experienced defender Semi Ajayi is expected to return to Nigeria’s starting lineup for today’s decisive 2026 World Cup Intercontinental Playoff qualifier against DR Congo, having completed a one-match suspension, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Ajayi was unavailable for Thursday’s semifinal, a 4–1 victory over Gabon, after receiving his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign in last month’s clash with Benin in Uyo. In his absence, Calvin Bassey partnered young defender Benjamin Fredrick at the centre of defence.
Head coach Eric Chelle is now likely to reshuffle his backline, with Fredrick expected to switch to right-back to accommodate Ajayi’s return alongside Bassey in central defence. Ajayi, known more for his reliability than flair, has remained a consistent and effective presence for Nigeria over the years.
Nigeria will face DR Congo tonight as both teams vie for Africa’s sole slot in the FIFA Intercontinental Playoff scheduled to take place in Mexico. The match is set for 8:00 p.m. (Nigerian time) at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
