Delta Queens Set To Boycott WAFU B Champions League Qualifier

Delta Queens could boycott their next fixture against Sam Nelly at the 2023 edition of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B qualifiers on Friday in protest over unpaid salaries, bonuses, and allowances.

The sole Nigerian representative are making their debut in the WAFU-B qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League 2023 and will aim to surpass Rivers Angels’ 2021 group stage and Bayelsa Queens’ 2022 third place feat.

The plan to stage a strike and boycott their next game comes after the 10-woman Asaba-based outfit defeated Burkina Faso side USFA 3-0 in their WAFU-B qualifiers opening match in Benin City on Sunday.

NigeriaFootball.ng understands that the Pearls are owed up to four days camp allowances, one-month unpaid salaries for July plus winning match bonuses for the opening victory over USFA at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

“What you’ve heard is not a rumour but truth. We are going ahead to press for our demands,” a Delta Queens player told NigeriaFootball. “We are ready to go as far as missing our next game against Sam Nelly on August 25 because this has to stop.

“We have been playing our hearts out and training hard to ensure we do Delta State and the country proud since we won the League in Asaba but our welfare is being ignored.”

Another player corroborated the earlier rumour, saying that, “We really don’t wish to embarrass the state government but we also cannot afford to play without the necessary motivation.

“We are determined to give our all but if our entitlements are not paid, we might not show up in the second game. We deserved all the encouragement to win the title and qualify in Benin City but the current situation is demotivating and discouraging.”

Delta Queens team manager Henrietta Ehiabor and media officer Lilian Oris Ukubeyinje did not respond to telephone calls on the matter, and they also didn’t reply to the text and WhatsApp messages sent to their phones as of the time of filing this report.
