Dike Reveals Reason For Dumping Nigeria

West Bromwich Albion forward Daryl Dike has explained why he opted to represent the United States instead of Nigeria at international level, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The striker, who is eligible for both countries, revealed that playing for the Super Eagles was once his dream before circumstances and career progression influenced his final decision.

“When I was younger, that was the thing you’re going to be part of the Super Eagles. My brother was trying to get me to play with Nigeria. When I was younger, to be honest, I fully thought I was going to play for Nigeria,” Dike told Beast Mode On.

However, the forward said his rise through Major League Soccer and a call-up from the United States changed his perspective.

“When I went to MLS and started playing, I never went to any academies when I was younger, and the USA called me. I remember talking with my brother and my family, and they told me that if I play for the USA, I won’t be able to play for Nigeria again. I knew that, but I still wanted to do it. At the end of the day, it’s your decision,” he explained.

Dike also pointed to strong competition in Nigeria’s attacking department as a factor in his choice.

“Nigeria has tons of phenomenal strikers. Who knows if I would even have been called by Nigeria? Then I looked at the USA and saw an exciting squad Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Sergiño Dest. There are so many big names, and I felt I could be part of that,” he added.

Despite his decision, the 24-year-old maintained that his Nigerian roots remain important to him. “Every footballer wants to represent their country. I’m fortunate to have Nigeria and the USA. I grew up in the USA, but I have my Nigerian roots. It’s a big part of me, and I wouldn’t brush it aside for something that may not even happen,” Dike said.

Dike’s family ties to Nigeria remain strong, with his sister, Courtney Dike, having previously represented Nigeria at international level.
