Ecuador Stun Germany To Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Ecuador pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany, securing a place in the knockout stage after a spirited display that ended the Germans' unbeaten run in the group phase.

With their tournament hopes hanging in the balance, Ecuador delivered when it mattered most, scoring a decisive second-half winner through Gonzalo Plata to ignite wild celebrations among players, supporters and coaching staff.

The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when Pedro Vite floated a corner kick into the penalty area. Kevin Rodríguez rose highest to flick the ball toward goal before Plata reacted quickest, stretching out his left foot to poke the ball beyond veteran German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Germany struggled to regain control after the interval as Ecuador grew stronger, with Plata's late winner ultimately proving decisive.

German captain Joshua Kimmich admitted Ecuador deserved the victory.

"The atmosphere was amazing," Kimmich said. "You could feel that there were many people from Ecuador. The difference today was that the opponent wanted to win more than us. You could really feel it, especially in the second half. That's why they won today. They really deserved it."

The victory ranks among the greatest in Ecuador's football history and guarantees their place in the knockout stage, with a performance that will be remembered by players and supporters for years to come.
