Eguma: Rivers United Taking Super Six Matches As They Come

Ibraheem Lateef

Stanley Eguma says his Rivers United is not ecstatic about topping the log owing to the 3 points it got off Sunshine Stars on Matchday 1 of the Nigeria Premier League Super 6 playoff, rather they are taking the matches as they come, reports BSNSports.com.ng.

The defending champions cruised past Sunshine Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, courtesy of a goal from a penalty scored by Ebube Duru.

"I want to commend the players of Sunshine Stars and mine for the effort they put into the game. We had an idea of how our opponent played, having taken 4points from six when we met them twice in the regular season.

"It was a balanced game, with both teams having their fair share of misses but Rivers United was the better side.

"We know they play a robotic defense, all was left for Mark Gibson to do the magic for the team, by dazzling the Sunshine Stars' back four with his ball skills.

"It paid off at the end, as his brilliance and good teamwork earned us a penalty and it was converted for the only goal of the game.

"The six teams that made it to the Super Six playoff are tough. For us, being the only team that got the maximum 3 points on Matchday 1; is no time to celebrate, rather we want to take the matches as they come.

Sunshine Stars is not like the other teams, the tactics we used against them may not necessarily yield the needed results if used against Enyimba, Lobi Stars, or Remo Stars.

"Our headache is how to get the next 3 points, critics should expect a different play from Rivers United in subsequent matches in the playoff."

Up next for the Pride of Rivers is a duel against Remo Stars on Monday.
