Ekpo Warns NFF: Secure Chelle’s Future Before Marseille Move Materialises

Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to extend the contract of Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle amid growing interest from Olympique de Marseille, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ekpo’s call follows reports that Marseille have opened discussions with Chelle as they search for a replacement for departing manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian’s exit was confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting the Ligue 1 club to step up efforts to appoint a successor.

According to French publication La Provence, talks have taken place between Marseille officials and Chelle, who is currently under contract with Nigeria. The 47-year-old Franco-Malian tactician is said to be among the candidates being considered for the role.

Chelle strengthened his credentials after guiding Nigeria to a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His tenure has been defined by an attacking philosophy and a commitment to youth development — qualities reportedly appealing to Marseille’s leadership.

Despite mounting speculation, the NFF has insisted that Chelle remains committed to the national team project and is contracted until 2027.

However, Ekpo believes the federation should act swiftly to secure the coach’s long-term future rather than risk losing him.

“He has done a good job with the Super Eagles, especially after the impressive display at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria won bronze,” Ekpo said.

“It would be a significant loss if Chelle is allowed to join Marseille. It would be better to let him continue his work here in Nigeria. The NFF should not wait until the final year of his contract before making a decision.”

With Marseille’s interest now public, the coming weeks are expected to determine whether the French club formalises its approach — and whether the NFF moves to protect its prized asset.
