Enyimba, Rivers Utd Battle For 2023 NPFL Title, As Lobi, Sunshine Bow Out

Enyimba International, Rivers United and Remo Stars are the top three clubs on the log at the end of MatchDay 5in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League play-off in Lagos, BSNSports.com.ng can report.

This follows wins recorded by the three teams on Friday at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos. All hopes are not lost for Bendel Insurance playing at the continent as they need to beat Remo Stars in their last match on Sunday.

Meanwhile the title race takes the centre stage as eight-time champions, Enyimba FC and the defending champions Rivers United will clash in the 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL Super 6 Play-off MatchDay 6 on Sunday.

Both champions will slug it out for the coveted trophy after they were pegged on the same 8 points after matchday 5 of the ongoing Super 6 in Lagos on Friday

In Matchday 5 encounters on Friday, Rivers United ended Bendel Insurance’s unbeaten run in the league after handing them a 2-1 defeat in the first match of the day.

In the second match, Remo Stars renewed their quest for a return to the continental league after they defeated Lobi Stars 2-0 to record 6 points.

In the last match of the day, 2019 champions, Enyimba FC showed grit and character as they thrashed Sunshine Stars 3-0 to record the highest goal scored in the tournament in a match.

Both Rivers United and Enyimba FC have equal 8 points but the People’s Elephant’s superior goal difference hands them the initiative on the log.

Following their defeats on Friday, Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars hopes of at least picking a continental ticket in the Play-off were dashed as they both have 2 points from four matches

Bendel Insurance can still pick a continental ticket if they defeat Remo Stars in their final match on Sunday

In the matches lined up on Sunday, Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars will square up by 2pm in bottom of the table clash.

Remo Stars will take on Bendel Insurance in the second match of the day. This match is critical for both teams. Remo will be aiming for a victory which will see them push for the title depending on the outcome of the last match of the day involving Enyimba and Rivers United. They will also be seeking to consolidate their continental ticket push.

The last match of the day, Enyimba FC vs Rivers United which will kick-off by 6pm will decide the winner of the 2023 NPFL season.

The 1st and 2nd place teams on the table will qualify for the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League while the team’s that comes 3rd will pick the CAF Confederation Cup.
