Eritrea Returns To International Football After Five-Year Absence

Eritrea will officially return to international football after a five-year absence, following confirmation from the Eritrean Football Federation that the national team will take part in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The development marks a significant milestone for the Red Sea Camels, who have been inactive in competitive international football since 2019 due to a combination of administrative and logistical challenges. 

Their re-entry into CAF competitions signals renewed efforts to revive the country’s football structures and reconnect with the continental game.

Although Eritrea has been away from official competitions, the national team took preliminary steps toward a comeback last year by playing two international friendly matches, which served as part of the rebuilding process.

Eritrea’s history at the Africa Cup of Nations remains limited, with their only appearance in the tournament coming in 2007. 

However, participation in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers offers the nation an opportunity to re-establish itself on the African football stage and provide competitive exposure for a new generation of players.

CAF is expected to include Eritrea in the official draw for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, officially ending their prolonged absence from international football.
