Ibrahim Lateef

Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), reports BSNSports.com.ng.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday named Shaibu as the new chief executive of the nation’s principal citadel of sports science and research, to take over from Professor Olawale Moronkola with immediate effect.

Comrade Shaibu’s unmatched passion for sports development was evident, as under his stewardship, sports in Edo State witnessed a historic revival in football and other sporting disciplines.

Bendel Insurance Football Club was not only revived from obscurity but rebranded into a formidable force in Nigerian football.

Edo Queens flourished with new energy and purpose, becoming a beacon of women’s football excellence.

The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium became a world-class facility, hosting national and international tournaments under his watch. As a former soccer player, Comrade Shaibu brings invaluable first-hand experience to the Nigerian Institute of Sports.

His track record as a distinguished sports administrator and policymaker further assures us that this appointment will usher in a new dawn for sports development nationwide.
