Ex-Super Eagles Coach Misses Chance To Reunite with Mourinho At Madrid
By Niyi Busari
Former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro has reportedly missed out on an opportunity to join José Mourinho’s coaching staff at Real Madrid, amid growing speculation surrounding changes to the Portuguese manager’s backroom team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Peseiro, who previously worked alongside Mourinho earlier in his coaching career, was said to be among the candidates considered for an assistant coaching role as plans emerged for a restructuring of Mourinho’s technical setup ahead of a potential return to top-level European football.
However, reports suggest Mourinho has opted to bring former Germany international and Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira into his coaching staff instead, effectively ending any prospects of a reunion with Peseiro in Madrid.
The 63-year-old Peseiro had been linked with a return to elite European football following a successful spell with Nigeria, where he guided the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
His previous working relationship with Mourinho was believed to have strengthened his candidacy for the role, but the reported decision reflects Mourinho’s preference for integrating younger former players into his coaching structure as they transition into managerial careers.
Despite the setback, Peseiro remains focused on his current responsibilities with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ula FC. His future at the club, however, remains uncertain after the team failed to secure promotion during the most recent campaign.
With internal reviews expected in the coming weeks, the experienced Portuguese coach could soon face important decisions regarding the next chapter of his managerial career.
While a return to Mourinho’s coaching circle appears unlikely for now, Peseiro’s extensive experience at both club and international level is expected to keep him in contention for future opportunities within the game.
