Ex-Super Eagles Forward Condemns NFF for Singling Out Troost-Ekong, Dessers After WCQ Draw

Former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie has strongly criticized the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for what he described as unprofessional conduct in the aftermath of Nigeria’s recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, faced a crucial window in September, needing back-to-back victories to boost their qualification hopes. The Super Eagles managed a narrow 1–0 win over Rwanda in Uyo but were held to a 1–1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein.

In the wake of the disappointing draw, a post-match report released by the NFF reportedly placed blame on captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers for their performances.

Reacting to the statement, Odemwingie expressed his disapproval, calling the NFF's approach unprofessional and symptomatic of deeper issues within the federation.

“It is a sign that wrong people are working in our federation — it’s very unprofessional,” Odemwingie said in an interview with Brila FM.

“These are people who work in certain positions without the required qualifications. They are just like fans — you could give that job to an ordinary fan, and he would probably do just as well.”

The former West Bromwich Albion star emphasized the importance of structural reform within Nigerian football, suggesting that the current leadership lacks the technical expertise required to support players and coaches effectively.

The criticism adds to growing calls from stakeholders and former internationals urging greater accountability and professionalism within the NFF, especially as the team faces mounting pressure to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
