The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has praised the players and management of Naija Ratels for their determined effort in the 2024 President Federation Cup, taking the battle for the coveted title to the wire.
Naija Ratels settled for a 10 million naira reward as runners-up following a 1-0 defeat to nine-time champions Rivers Angels, due to Blessing Okpe's heartbreaking strike.
In a complimentary message signed by FCT SWAN's Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, Chairman Kelechi Onwudiwe, recounted the Naija Ratels' qualification for the final as "no small feat" and a significant achievement for the football fraternity in the FCT.
Onwudiwe remarked, "Their journey to the final is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and it brings pride to all football enthusiasts in the capital."
The leadership of FCT SWAN also commended the outstanding performance of Naija Ratels striker Agama Ziperekefeghe, who emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with 10 goals.
"Ziperekefeghe's impressive performances were pivotal for the team, and her achievement as the topscorer is well-deserved," the statement read.
Additionally, FCT SWAN lauded the club president and its patron, Barrister Paul Edeh, for his "uncommon passion and commitment" to the growth of football in the capital, while appealing for his sustained efforts towards the development of the sport in the FCT.
"Barrister Edeh's dedication is inspiring, and we urge for ongoing commitment to ensure the beautiful game continues to thrive in our region," the statement concluded.
Naija Ratels joined the FCT's history books as the second women's team to reach the final of the prestigious national championship after the defunct FCT Queens' feat in 1999 and 2000.
