FCT Sports Department, SWAN Reinforce Partnership For Sports Development

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department and the FCT chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in promoting sports development in the nation's capital.

At a strategic meeting held at the FCT Sports Department office in Area 3, Abuja on Monday, February 24, 2025, FCT Director of Sports Luka Istifanus and FCT SWAN chairman Kelechi Onwudiwe emphasized the importance of a strong partnership in enhancing sports coverage and fostering growth across various disciplines.

Istifanus expressed his joy over the reunification of FCT SWAN after years of factional divisions, noting that a united association would play a more effective role in sports development.

"I'm particularly happy to see FCT SWAN now fully united after years of division. A strong and cohesive SWAN is critical for the advancement of sports in the FCT, and we are ready to work closely with the leadership to achieve our common goals," Istifanus stated.

He further assured that the Sports Department would continue working with SWAN leadership to ensure robust coverage of its activities.

"We have had productive discussions in the past, and we just need to build on that understanding. A strong working relationship with SWAN is crucial to ensuring that our programs, athletes, and sporting initiatives receive the visibility and support they deserve," he added.

Istifanus also assured that FCT SWAN will receive quality representation at the department’s various activities, including the Ogun State 2024 National Sports Festival, emphasizing the importance of professional media coverage in promoting the territory’s sporting engagements.

The sports director confirmed that at least 92 athletes would represent the FCT in Jos for the National Sports Festival zonal qualifiers, expressing confidence in the team's preparations and qualification for the finals.

Onwudiwe, in his remarks, wished the athletes and officials success in their quest to qualify for the festival while reaffirming SWAN’s readiness to support the Sports Department in advancing sports development.

"We stand firmly behind the FCT contingent as they compete in Jos, and we wish them the very best. Beyond that, SWAN remains committed to collaborating with the Sports Department in driving policies and initiatives that will elevate sports in the FCT," the ace broadcaster said.

On the part of the FCT Sports Department, Istifanus was joined by Deputy Director Medical Dr. Charles Agadu, Deputy Director Sports Development Mr. Iyiola Ogundele, Sports Technical Dr. Esther Whoba, Head Racket Games Mr. Jones Owoida Adakole, Assistant Director Information Mrs. Vivian Onubogu, and Head of Admin Mr. Mohammed O. Abdullah.

The FCT SWAN delegation also included Vice Chairman Victor Okoye, Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, Financial Secretary Niyi Busari, and Welfare Officer Joan Iwuchukwu.
