FG Unveils Cash Rewards, Camp Allowances for Team Nigeria Ahead of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Federal Government has announced a cash reward package for Team Nigeria athletes who win medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of efforts to boost the country's performance at the multi-sport event, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking during the unveiling of the Games Hosting Rights in Abuja on Friday, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, said gold medallists will receive $3,000, silver medallists $2,000, while bronze medallists will earn $1,500.

Olopade also disclosed that the Federal Government has commenced the payment of camp allowances to athletes preparing for the Games, describing the move as part of efforts to ensure Team Nigeria is adequately motivated ahead of the competition.

"We have taken a decision on the reward package for our athletes. Gold medallists will receive $3,000, silver medallists $2,000, while bronze medallists will earn $1,500," Olopade said.

"Another piece of good news is that we have started paying camp allowances to athletes in various training camps across the world. We want to ensure they are fully motivated and in the right frame of mind going into the Games."

The NSC Director-General added that coaches of medal-winning athletes will also receive performance bonuses, with a reward of $5,000 approved as part of the incentive package.

Olopade further announced a partnership between the NSC and The What Network to provide free-to-air coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, allowing Nigerians to follow Team Nigeria's campaign throughout the competition.

"Recognising the importance of bringing the Games into every Nigerian home, the NSC has partnered with The What Network to deliver free-to-air coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games," he said.

"Through this collaboration, every Nigerian will be able to follow Team Nigeria's journey live and free, celebrating the dedication of our athletes and inspiring the next generation of sporting champions."

Also speaking at the event, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko assured that funding would not be a constraint to Nigeria's participation, stating that the Federal Government remains committed to providing the necessary financial support for the country's athletes.

The initiative reflects the Commission's commitment to enhancing Team Nigeria's preparations while making one of the world's premier multi-sport events accessible to fans across the country.

Nigeria is expected to field a strong contingent at the Games, including world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi, shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, para-powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and several other elite athletes competing in athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, weightlifting and para sports.
