FIBA Congress: Senegalese President Wants Increment In Afrobasket Cash Prize
By Sampson Adedeji
Ahead of the 2023 Women's Afrobasket in Kigali Rwanda, the President of the Senegalese basketball federation, Babacar Ndiaye has canvassed for increment in cash prize of the winners Afrobasket championship to be increased, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
He made the statement during the 18th edition of the FIBA Congress that was held in Maputo Mozambique last weekend.
He made it clear that it's not tenable that the winner of the African Basketball League earned more than the winner of the Afrobasket.
“We need to think about how to make AfroBasket profitable because that is a problem.
We cannot understand that the winner of the AfroBasket does not earn much (money).
What we give is a symbolic sum. I explained to the Senegalese press that there is a share of responsibility even on the part of African States because what makes money are TV rights.
However, few African states buy them for basketball. But we have to think about it because it is inconceivable that the winner of the BAL wins more than that of the AfroBasket,†said Ndiaye.
The winner of BAL currently earns $150,000.
