Nigeria’s D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama has outlined key areas her team must improve ahead of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Nigerian side endured a mixed outing at the recently concluded qualifying tournament, managing just two wins from five matches, raising concerns about their readiness for the global showpiece.
Speaking after the tournament, Wakama stressed the importance of stronger starts and better decision-making during crucial moments of games.
“We have to start better. We have to start games better, make better decisions in critical moments, and continue to improve,” she said.
The D’Tigress coach also highlighted lapses in execution, noting that the team struggled in areas they had previously worked on.
“We had a lot of breakdowns in this tournament, especially in areas we have already worked on. We just need to be more focused at the start of games and bring the right energy, that is the main thing,” Wakama added.
The 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is scheduled to take place in Berlin from September 4 to 13.
The draw for the competition will be held on April 21 at Kraftwerk Berlin, alongside the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2026 enshrinement ceremony.
