FIFA Celebrates Osimhen’s U-17 World Cup Heroics Ahead of Nigeria–Gabon Playoff
By BSN Sports
World football governing body FIFA has paid tribute to Victor Osimhen, hailing his remarkable exploits at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile—just days before Nigeria’s crucial World Cup playoff clash against Gabon, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, FIFA shared a highlight reel of Osimhen’s record-breaking tournament performance, where he scored 10 goals to power the Golden Eaglets to their fifth world title. The post, accompanied by the caption celebrating his feat, reignited global admiration for the Nigerian striker’s extraordinary journey from youth prodigy to international star.
At just 16 years old, Osimhen scored in all but one match at the 2015 tournament, including a hat-trick against Australia in the Round of 16 and the decisive goal in the final against Mali. His tally of 10 goals set a new FIFA U-17 World Cup record—a mark that still stands.
That breakout performance launched Osimhen’s professional career. He first joined VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, before moving to Lille OSC in France, where his form earned him a record transfer to SSC Napoli. In Italy, he became a household name, inspiring Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2023.
Now leading the line for Galatasaray in Turkey, the 26-year-old has continued to impress, guiding the club to a domestic double last season. With his consistency and leadership, Osimhen has cemented his place as Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer, behind the late Rashidi Yekini.
As the Super Eagles prepare to face Gabon on November 13 in Morocco, FIFA’s post serves as both a celebration of Osimhen’s past heroics and a timely reminder of his importance to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup ambitions.
A victory against Gabon would move Nigeria one step closer to qualification, setting up a decisive playoff tie against DR Congo or Cameroon.
Osimhen’s story from humble beginnings in Lagos to global stardom remains one of Nigeria’s most inspiring sporting journeys, symbolizing perseverance, passion, and excellence on the world stage.
