Nigeria have received a significant boost ahead of their March international fixtures after former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was officially cleared by FIFA to represent the Super Eagles, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 24-year-old is now eligible for immediate selection as Nigeria prepare for a four-nation invitational tournament in Amman, where they will face Iran and hosts Jordan. The Super Eagles are scheduled to open camp on 24 March, with matches against Iran on 27 March and Jordan four days later at the Amman International Stadium.

Okonkwo’s availability comes at a crucial moment for Nigeria, with first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali currently without a club, raising concerns over match fitness and stability in goal. His clearance provides head coach Eric Chelle with an additional option as the 47-year-old tactician continues rebuilding the squad following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

International Clearance Finalised

FIFA approved Okonkwo’s switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria in January 2026, concluding a lengthy eligibility process. Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth levels, featuring for the U15, U16, U17 and U18 teams between 2015 and 2019.

The goalkeeper began his professional career at Arsenal F.C. before moving on in search of regular first-team opportunities. He is currently on the books of Wrexham A.F.C..

Reports indicate that Okonkwo’s decision to commit to Nigeria followed discussions with Chelle during the Unity Cup tournament in London last year, a competition Nigeria won. The coach is understood to have outlined his long-term vision for the national team, persuading the goalkeeper to pursue a nationality switch and secure a Nigerian passport.

Although administrative processes prevented him from being available for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the upcoming friendlies now present an opportunity for Okonkwo to make his senior international debut.
