FIFA President Gianni Infantino has shared the reasoning behind the recent decision to expand the FIFA Women’s World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
On Friday, the FIFA Council unanimously approved the expansion, citing the "remarkable recent strides made by women’s football globally."
The tournament will now feature 48 teams, organized into 12 groups, increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104 and extending the competition by one week.
“This is not just about having 16 more teams participate,” Infantino said.
“It’s about taking the next steps for the women’s game overall—ensuring more FIFA Member Associations can benefit from the tournament and further develop their women’s football programs.
“This decision helps us sustain the momentum in growing the women’s game worldwide,” he added.
