FIFA U17 Women's World Cup: FG Urged To Confer National Honours On Flamingos

The proprietor of Naija Ratel - a women football team in Abuja -, Barrister Paul Edeh has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari led government to confer national honour on the record-breaking Flamingos.

The Nigeria U17 Women's team on Sunday defeated European champions Germany 3-2 on penalties to claim the bronze medal. The highest achievement by any African country.

Barrister Paul Edeh who has been supporting the team financially while in camping in Abuja opined that the feat achieved by the girls deserves national honours and scholarship.

Coincidentally, Flamingos head coach, Bankole Olowookere is the coach of Abuja based Naija Ratels.

"For a team whose players have no experience internationally to achieve such feat deserve something huge from the Federal Government. I mean, Federal Government should confer on them national honours and give scholarship to some of them who are in school." Paul told BSN Sports.

On Thursday, September 15, Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, conferred a host of national honours on the wildly successful Nigerian contingent to the Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham between July 28 – August 8. This gesture of recognition was in appreciation of the scintillating performances that Team Nigeria recorded by at the quadrennial international multi-sport event, carting home 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze medals to end the Games as the seventh-best team in the competition and the highest-ranked African country.

On Sunday when the 2022 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup ended, Spain, Colombia and Nigeria are first, second and third respectively in Championship. The defending champions Spain pipped Colombia 1-0 in the final.
