Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, are on the verge of qualifying for yet another FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, continuing a remarkable record of appearances at every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Falconets featured at the maiden edition in Canada in 2002, when the competition was staged as an U-19 tournament, and also competed in Thailand 2004 before the age category was upgraded to U-20 ahead of the 2006 finals in Russia. Since then, Nigeria have remained a constant presence at the global showpiece, appearing in Chile 2008, Germany 2010, Japan 2012, Canada 2014, Papua New Guinea 2016, France 2018, Costa Rica 2022 and Colombia 2024.

As preparations intensify for the Poland 2026 finals, the two-time runners-up and 2012 semi-finalists are determined to maintain their impressive qualification streak.

The Falconets will face Malawi’s U-20 girls on Saturday at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg played in Ikenne-Remo last weekend.

Nigeria’s delegation arrived in Malawi on Wednesday, with Head Coach Moses Aduku expressing confidence in the team’s readiness ahead of the decisive encounter.

Speaking during Friday’s pre-match press conference, Aduku said the players were fully focused on securing qualification.

“We are here to play and to win. The players understand the importance of this match, and we are fully prepared mentally, tactically and physically for the challenge ahead,” he said.

According to the technical crew, preparations have centred on improving the team’s efficiency in the early stages of matches while maintaining the strong second-half performances shown in recent fixtures.

Training sessions have also focused on enhancing attacking coordination, tightening defensive organisation and improving conversion of scoring opportunities.

The decisive return leg is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, with kickoff fixed for 3:00pm Malawi time (2:00pm Nigeria time).

The Falconets reached the final qualification round after dominant aggregate victories over Rwanda and Senegal. Nigeria defeated Rwanda 5-0 on aggregate before overcoming Senegal 3-1 across two legs.

Elsewhere on the continent, Ghana face a difficult task against Uganda in Kampala after securing a narrow 2-1 first-leg victory in Accra.

Cameroon will head to Dar es Salaam with a comfortable 3-1 advantage over Tanzania, while Benin Republic are well placed to progress after earning a 1-1 draw away to Côte d’Ivoire in the first leg in Abidjan.
