Falconets Face Hosts, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast In WAFU B AFCON

Nigeria U20 women's national team, Falconets will take on Ghana, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in the maiden WAFU B Nations Cup to be hosted by Ghana.

The U20 regional age-grade competition will hold from 20th May to 4th June, 2023. 

The tournament, organized by the West African Football Union Zone B, will see seven countries compete for the title. Apart from Nigeria, the other participating nations include Ghana, Niger, Benin, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Burkina Faso.

The venues, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex have been selected for the competition. The Secretariat of the West African Football Union Zone B has also released the logo for the event.

The WAFU U20 Women's Cup is a women's association football competition contested by national teams of all West African Football Union.

The first edition was scheduled to hold in 2022 with eleven teams but was postponed.

It was also planned to hold in November 2021 but it was again postponed until May, 2023.

Nigeria’s women’s national under-20 side, the Falconets have a proud history in international competitions.

The team had qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and has been runners-up twice, losing to Germany on both occasions in 2010 and 2014. They were also quarterfinalists at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In the African U-20 World Cup qualification, the Falconets have won the championship title and qualified for the World Cup 10 times, with the most recent being in 2022.

The Falconets also won the gold medal at the football competition at the African Games in 2019.

With Nigeria’s rich history in women’s football, their participation in the Women’s U-20 Cup of Nations will surely be a tournament highlight. Fans will be eagerly anticipating their performances as they aim to add another trophy to their already impressive collection.
