Falconets Land in Lilongwe for Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Malawi

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have arrived in Lilongwe ahead of their decisive second-leg encounter against Malawi in the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The team departed Abuja on Tuesday and landed at Kamuzu International Airport, the main gateway to Malawi’s capital, located about 26 kilometres north of Lilongwe. The journey, which typically includes a stopover, lasts between 12 and 15 hours.

Nigeria head into the return fixture with a 2-0 advantage, secured in the first leg last weekend. The Falconets are now well positioned to advance, needing only to avoid conceding more than two goals to confirm their place at the tournament.

However, the hosts are preparing for a spirited response. The Football Association of Malawi has announced free entry for supporters, a move aimed at filling the stadium and creating a charged atmosphere for the encounter. Malawi will be relying on strong home backing as they attempt to overturn the deficit against the seven-time African champions.

Despite the anticipated pressure, Nigeria remain confident after a composed performance in the first leg, where they established control of the tie.

The aggregate winner over the two matches will secure qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Poland later this year.
