Federation Cup Upset: NLO Side Ahudiyannem Knock Out Abia Warriors on Penalties

Ahudiyannem FC of Abiriba produced a major upset in the Abia State President Federation Cup, eliminating Abia Warriors FC in the first semi-final after a dramatic penalty shootout.

The Nationwide League One (NLO) side secured a 4-3 victory on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time, marking the second consecutive year they have knocked out the Nigeria Premier Football League outfit at the same stage and in similar fashion.

Despite entering the contest as favourites, Abia Warriors struggled to convert their dominance into goals. Head coach Imama Amapakabo made just one change to his previous lineup, introducing Jibrin Faiz in place of Imoh Obot.

The Warriors started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Yakub Hammed forced a deflection that resulted in a corner inside the opening minutes. However, their best opportunity in the first half came in the 31st minute when they were awarded a penalty. Paul Samson saw his effort saved by Ahudiyannem goalkeeper Uche Nwobodo, compounding a frustrating attacking display.

Further chances fell to Suraj Lawal, whose effort from inside the box was also denied, as Ahudiyannem remained resolute in defence.

Abia Warriors improved after the break following the introduction of Valentine Ugwu and Israel Joseph, but they continued to lack the cutting edge required to break down their opponents. A notable opportunity arrived in the 59th minute, when Chindi Merpring failed to convert from close range after a well-delivered cross from Lawal, with the goalkeeper already beaten.

Ahudiyannem, who offered limited attacking threat throughout the match, remained disciplined at the back and took the contest to penalties after the final whistle.

In the shootout, Abia Warriors faltered once again, missing two spot-kicks compared to Ahudiyannem’s single miss. The result confirmed a memorable victory for the defending state champions, who progress to yet another final and continue their impressive run in the competition.
