Financial Pressures Force Nationwide League One Back to Centralized Venues

Nationwide League One (NLO) has approved a return to a stadium-based league format for the 2026 season, citing persistent security concerns and the financial burden associated with a traditional home-and-away structure, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The decision was reached during the league’s Annual General Meeting held virtually on Saturday, February 28, 2026. League officials said the centralized format is designed to address operational challenges that have affected clubs in recent seasons.

Under the new arrangement, matches will be played at designated venues rather than across individual club grounds. The league stated that the host stadium or stadiums will be announced at a later date.

Delegates at the meeting also appealed for an extension on registration fee deadlines, arguing that many clubs are grappling with financial constraints. The request is expected to be reviewed by the league’s management.

According to officials, the stadium-based model is intended to significantly reduce travel expenses, enhance match-day security, and create a more broadcast-friendly environment for partners and supporters.

The NLO has faced mounting challenges in recent years, particularly around club funding and safety logistics. Stakeholders have repeatedly called for structural reforms to ensure sustainability at Nigeria’s third-tier level.

League administrators described the move as part of a broader strategy to stabilize operations, strengthen governance, and establish a more sustainable framework for participating clubs ahead of the 2026 campaign.
